The Well-Ordered Home

The Well-Ordered Home: Organizing Techniques for Inviting Serenity Into Your Life by Kathleen Kendall-Tackett

This is a useful little book. The author argues that how your home feels matters more than how it looks, and that organization is what makes a home feel good. The tips she gives are useful and easy to put into practice. Here are a couple of examples: She tells you to alphabetize your spices. I’ve done this and it makes them significantly easier to find while I’m cooking. I also like how it looks in the cupboard. She also teaches you how to use active storage: the things you use most often should be extremely easy to get to, and the things you rarely use should be in less convenient storage spaces. This applies to clothes and kitchen tools alike. I haven’t rearranged all my dresser and kitchen drawers yet, but it is in the works.

It’s a short book, but it is full of insight about keeping your house easy to live in and easy to manage.

How to make ginger tea

  1. Cut a few thin slices of ginger.
  2. Put them in a sauce pan and press them with a fork to bruise them.
  3. Add water and boil it for 15 minutes.
  4. Let it cool enough to drink, and then pour the tea (without the ginger slices) into a tea cup.
